You probably can't.

The find dialog box won't accept things like Alt+key combinations, & there is no method to enter them otherwise.

There is an option to Convert Tabs to Spaces, but I'm not sure at what point those changes would take affect during the edit of a file.

The rube is right, there were a lot of comments on that in the past (just use search to find them)

sep. 2002 (v.2.xx): Roberto (request for regex)
mar. 2004 (v1.5.0): my request for search/replace options for non-printable characters (and regex).
sep. 2004 (v1.5.0): doddledod, and myself

For conveniance i will quote both my request, as well as Genadi's answer:

Search & Replace
Would it be possible to enhance the Search & Replace dialog window, so that it would become possible to enter shortcuts for searching/replacing non-printble characters like the < tab >?
(or < even better > use regular expressions  :<img src="http://www.gena01.com/forum/Smileys/default/wink.gif" alt="Wink" border="0" />: )

A simple search and replace string could look like this:

search:  \t {for intance for tab}
replace: \n {for instance for newline character}

For expert search & replace it would be nice to be able to use regex.

ANSWER
I guess \t and \n could be added. I am not sure if I'll be adding full regex support any time soon.

Unfortunately, I don't think that even the \t and \n actually made it into the program, maybe this time...

By the way, 'Convert Tabs to Spaces' takes effect as soon as you press the enter key. (Just try it out, enter a TAB and walk backwards using the left arrow key)

@Genadi
Keep up! Hope you are doing fine!

Nope, I am wrong about that.
It will allow Alt+key combinations.

Most combinations are "standard", others not?
Some differ from Notepad.
For instance, Alt+233 gives you 'Θ' in notepad, but a 'T' in win32pad.

Couple of charts for reference:
The Extended ASCII Chart
ANSI character set and equivalent Unicode and HTML characters

Thats going to be about as far as I can go with this.  Gennady or others will have to chime in.

And FWIW, "extended" characters display in a "regular" style in 1.5.10, compared to the "typical" darkened (or bolded) style that "normal" text displays as, & also compared to that same darkened style that they displayed in win32pad 1.5.9.1.

Ah, so that was what you meant!
You were not completely wrong though...

Try entering the Alt+Key combination for TAB or NEWLINE.
You will not be able to, as they will both have "meaning" for the program.
When a dialog is active, TAB will move the focus, and NEWLINE (= ENTER) will execute the default button.
So, there is a need for other means to enter these codes in the Find & Replace window.

By the way, Alt+233 renders the same in notepad as win32pad for me: Ú (Windows XP Home Edition - Dutch)

The way to search for tabs or strings including tabs & returns is to highlight the tab or string with the cursor, then do alt e, f. The string with tab/return will already be in the search box.

I wish it could be done the other way round too, ie to put returns into the replace with box, but it doesnt seem to be possible.
